2481 - Week 8 Report

As the original type of all motion captures system, prosthetic motion capture is highly sensitive to human movements, and that’s where the most important problem is: too sensitive and not well organized.

Basic on the placed tracker suit, which is heavy and easily shaking, prosthetic motion capture just couldn’t evade a critical problem that its capturing results always perform an unstoppably shaking and rotation in strange directions. As on our project, motion capturing “dancing” seems to be as hard as creating it in transitional way for the in the final results our actor’s simple cheer dance turned into an amazing magic trick out of human imagination. And about the suit, its outer-bone structure also killed the possibility of applied movements quite much, the waving of arms and legs are limited in a narrow space so fierce fighting, jumping and sprinting are moved out of our plan as well.

Focus on our team project, we have a dance scene of prince in the very beginning of animation, at first we intend to make our prince jumping, rotating with varies of hands movements to achieve a clownery expression effect, however, it is eventually simplized to small cheer dance as we found it’s an impossible quest to complete those complex movements in the same time. On what happened just the same is the fighting scene in the end, clearly our proto plan including kinds of exaggeration is not capable for prosthetic motion capture system.

Another reason that we need to delete some of our character movements what are originally been in the plan is it take too much time to complete them. As mentioned above, prosthetic motion capture system is too sensitive and not well organized, these directly lead to multiple test on one movement capturing and extra editing inside 3D Max. So consequencely we need to spend hours on seconds of character movements, and this really doesn’t save much time compared to the traditional animating way.

Now let’s have a look at the organic motion capture system, this latest product’s most recognized features are No marker and High Accuracy. Although Acoustic and magnetic motion capture system also has a high freedom on movements limitation, their accuracy are not so satisfied. And that’s where the organic motion capture earns its place: makes actor the capture sensor itself and makes seconds movement finish in seconds.

The best and only benefit of tools is make human finish the same work with less time and less effort, and that’s what I expected from organic motion capture system. High accuracy will save the huge amount of time need to spend on multiple tests currently and set us free from hours of after editing, then we could have more time on modeling, audio editing, texturing and other stuff. Secondary, of course no marker could offer us much more options of character move expressions, all the deleted plan mentioned above would be possible and not that difficult to apply. Anyway, save time, save effort and more choices, we have no reason not to looking forward of organic motion capture, and god bless AIT have it earlier.
