Our current mocap suit the prosthetic/hybrid has many limitations to it due to its size and weight and the fact that the actor needs to where it in order to record the motions. This means there is some motions that the actor just cannot perform. For instance nearly all aerobic movements like rolls, flips, spins and even big jumps are really not suited for this style of system because it is to bulky and to hard to maneuver, the added pressure of not wanting to break any parts of the suit also makes it more difficult. The range of motions of the body is less to because the actor is limited by the suit. For this reason the animation movements that are going to be recorded in our animation are a lot simpler for example “walking”, “waving”, “turning around”, “running away” and “knocking on door”. These animations are a lot more practical for this kind of mocap system

The use of the organic mocap system would be a huge asset to our project for many reasons. The fact that the system doesn’t require anything to be worn gives the actor a greater range of motions to work with so that actions like turning around and running away can be performed a lot easier then if a we use the prosthetic/hybrid suit which we have now. Also some of the recordings like “falling to ground” and “laying on the ground laughing” which at the moment is going to be a hand animated animation, these animations could be done with the organic suit and make it look at lot more realistic then it will by hand animation. The current suit would not allow for these kinds of animations to be conducted because it involves falling and laying on the ground which would most likely cause damage to the suit.

Having an organic motion capture suit I think would do 2 things. One it would allow students to record motions a lot quicker and easier then now. There is less time needed to setup because no suit is required and at the moment 30 or so minutes is just spent putting the suit on, with the organic system this time can be spent doing more recordings quicker. Also the cleaning up of the animations wont be so hard because the animation will be a lot smoother, at the moment for example our suit if you want the actor to clap hands together it has to be done manually which is a pain and time consuming, the new suit will allow easy recordings of simple tasks like clapping.

The second positive to that would occur with the organic suit is in the imagination of the animation. At the moment all the animation is very simple and not very complex and a lot of the moments are rather stationary due to the suits limitations. With the organic suit it encourages more exciting animation like running jumps, hand stands, flips, dancing and a lot more motions that require a lot of body movement. This will only improve the animation and make it more appealing and with less mundane movements.
