The prosthetic motion capture is one of the early methods for capturing the motion from various parts of human anatomy. It can help us to easily capture human movements that can make more natural movement for animation or film. The prosthetic motion capture also has many limitations for our project.
About motion capture suit which is very heavy and require a lot of cable to connect to the box and machine. At the same time, you need a lot of people to help person to wear it and fix the suit position. Because this program, the actor cannot do exaggerated movements or do some hard action that include hit someone, fighting, clap and etc. for example, our project have a lot of fight scenes, we use the prosthetic to capture it, but we feel these movements have a little stiff. You know the fight need strong power and force. Our current motion capture suit has limitations that affect the range of the motion. We need use 3d max to fix some of fighting action. If we want to do jumping, sprinting and some hard or need a big space to do actions. Our current motion capture cannot accurately do that.
Some of our actions cannot be captured very accurately. This is also related to the limitations mentioned before. On our project, some of the movement can easily to capture it such as walking, look up, move body(about ghost). But like turn around, slowly stand up, hitting that is hard to control. For example, we have a wake up scenes. the actor need do slowly stand up action. Our motion capture suit just captures squatting position and stand up action, but its hip is not move, the feet are vacant. Basically, the motion capture is very convenient to make animation. However, our motion capture suit is still many problems, so we need to spend a lot of the time to change or fix and reduce our animated action.
With the 3d animations, movies and games development, motion captures are becoming increasingly important. Original motion capture is being further improved and renovated. The motion capture include a lot of system like our motion capture is Prosthetic, Acoustic capture (which is another method currently used for performance capture), Magnetic (This is a popular method used for performance capture), Optical (this systems have become quite popular over the last couple of years). What do you expect the organic motion capture system? The first point, the motion capture suit can reduce the weight that can be done to facilitate actors to do more flexible movement. Next one, can reduce cable connect or change connect way like use wireless to collect information. And high accuracy capture can help direct saving more time, we can spend more time to do other things like make camera, choose good sound and music, make perfect modeling, collect some detail to help our project and etc. I heard that AIT has a new motion capture. I believe it must be better than current motion capture. I look forward to use it.
Our motion capture suit (prosthetic)
This is one of the early methods for capturing the motion from various parts of human anatomy. These methods include simple "on/off" type of motion detection systems as well as complex motion tracking systems. The latter type of prosthetic motion capture could be an ideal approach if it wasn’t for the complex mechanical requirements and the performance-inhibiting qualities generally associated with such designs. However, the type of data provided could be clean rotational data collected in real time without any occlusion problems. This method is based on a set of armatures which must be attached all over the performer’s body. The armatures are then connected to each other by using a series of rotational and linear encoders. These encoders are then connected to an interface that can simultaneously read all the encoders in order to prevent data skewing. Finally, through a set of trigonometry functions, the performer’s motion can be analyzed. These design restrictions seem to be quite difficult to overcome, and will probably limit the use of these type of devices for character animation.
The organic motion capture system
From the application point of view, performance capture animation system mainly expressions and body motion capture two types, from the real-time, there are the real-time capture system and two non-real-time capture system.
So far, the commonly used motion capture technology, said from the principle can be divided into Prosthetic, Acoustic, Magnetic, and optical. Advantages
1. The inertial motion capture suit is fabricated with fiver suit, and plus a number of sensors on suit. The actor can do some freedom of movement because the inertial motions capture no camera.
2. It is a flexible and portable motion capture system that can be used indoors or outdoors.
3. Clean and smooth motion capture data
4. Real-time motion capture visualization
5. Because the inertial motion capture suit is no more detail, Actors can easily to wear it.
6. Unlimited capture volume
7. Flexible solution
If you use the inertial motion capture, it can solve more programs such as make exaggerated movements, actors’ action is more flexible especially capturing sport action, No space constraints and others things. In some ways, I think the inertial motion capture is better than others.
Disadvantages
1. Actors should consume a lot of physical. For example, if director needs a ski action. Actors need to really do this action. However, if director is not satisfied, the actors have to constantly repeat until the action satisfaction.
2. The Movement is not confined to a motion capture area however; it must be used within finite length of the computer capturing the data.
3. Spend long time to collect motion capture data.
4. Can't track the hips height. For example, you can capture actor ski action, but the action is the same level to move the body. If you want to see the effect, You have to manually go into the software
5. The inertial motion capture is more suitable for human action. If you want to make animal action may be this suit is not good to control it.
6. No markers. The system uses strictly inertial sensors, so you don't have to stick markers onto the suit.
7. No cameras. Since you have no markers, you have no cameras to capture the markers.
